Green light for energy efficient lamps

Green Lighting is using its experience in energy efficient lighting to help developers
meet building regulations while also keeping homeowners happy

Specialising in lighting for domestic architects and house builders, Green Lighting deals with
customers from self-builders to national developers on parts B, E and L building regulations
which can be breached through lighting.

The company deals directly with builders via the marketing of its Snaplite downlighter, the first
fire and acoustic rated downlighter in the market. Green Lighting has been providing low
energy lighting solutions since the inception of part L1 in 2002.

Unfortunately, in its early years, Part L1 was generally ignored or left to electrical contractors
to fit cheap low energy pendants which often did not comply and offered undesirable light levels.
Early compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) also produced poor light quality, with householders
often complaining that the lamps took ages to reach optimum brightness.

Green Lighting uses the latest CFL technology and high frequency ballasts to ensure light is
instant and using a 2700k-colour temperature which is pleasing to the eye. The company has
designed and manufactured a range of dedicated low energy lighting solutions to help builders
score maximum points for internal and external lighting when building to the Code for
sustainable homes, together with other CFL-based items such as mirrors, shelves and under
cabinet fittings.

All Green Lighting products are manufactured to exceed the minimum efficacy in part L1a and
the Code for sustainable homes. The company’s trademark Emerald low energy downlighter
offers a 60 per cent increase in efficacy. Manufacturers often use the dimming capabilities of
their fittings to increase sales. Such fittings are often nine or 11W which creates little light,
posing the question: why dim a fitting that is already lacking in light output?

Green Lighting’s Emerald is supplied standard with an 18w pl-t lamp, high frequency ballast
and reflector. Different attachments can be used to maximise or minimise light output.
A dimming version will be available Autumn 2008.

Green Lighting also offers developers added value services including lighting design, supply
chain management, rebate structures to rapid prototyping for bespoke custom manufacturing
using low energy CFLs with the latest electronic dimming and switching to meet project
requirements.
